Methodology
breath.fyi Compass
Compass shows where a breathwork school's teaching leans: towards health, performance or the spiritual. It is breath.fyi's reading of how each school describes itself. The school does not state or approve it, and it is not a quality rating.
The three orientations
Health
Body-centred, nervous-system and trauma-informed work: regulation, recovery and therapeutic breathwork.
125 schools lean this wayPerformance
Functional breathing, CO2 tolerance and breath mechanics for athletes, focus and resilience.
15 schools lean this waySpiritual
Altered states, transpersonal and ceremonial work: consciousness, depth and transformation.

How to read it
- On a card
- Cards name only the school's focus. When one orientation has 45 or more of 100, it is the focus, for example Health focus. When none does, the school is a Balanced mix.
Health focus
breath.fyi Compass
- On a school's page
- The ring shows all three weights. They are whole numbers that add up to 100, each arc is as long as its weight, and the number in the middle is the leading one.
- On the orientation pages
- Each orientation page lists every school with at least 34 there, strongest first, so a balanced school can appear on more than one.
How we make it
- Source
- What each school publishes about itself in the member directories of the International Breathwork Foundation (IBF) and the Global Professional Breathwork Alliance (GPBA): its description, methods, formats, audiences and the trainings it offers, plus the short summary breath.fyi writes from that listing. Compass does not read the school's own website.
- Reading
- An AI language model reads that information against a fixed rubric: the three definitions above, and rules such as 70 or more for a clearly single-orientation school and no orientation above 45 for a broad one. When a listing says too little, it falls back to an even split.
- Checks
- The breath.fyi team spot-checks the results. Every school is read with the same rubric, and a school's weights change only when its listing changes or we revise the rubric.
- Today
- 73 schools have a health focus, 55 a spiritual focus and 3 a performance focus; 28 are a balanced mix.
What Compass is not
- A rating
- It does not rank schools. A health focus is not better than a spiritual one, and a high number is not a high score.
- The school's statement
- Schools do not supply or approve their weights, even though the reading starts from their own words.
- A health judgement
- "Health" describes what a school's teaching emphasises. It says nothing about whether breathwork helps with any condition.
- A measurement
- It is a direction read from a short text, not an observation of the training itself.
